Last week I was in Ottawa speaking at Carleton University as well as delivering the closing keynote for UXcamp Ottawa. Here are some photographic highlights of my time there. Look for the rest of my pictures on Flickr.

The Canada Hall in the Canadian Museum of Civilization. Depicting 1000 years of history, this was an outstanding exhibit. In addition to the familiar elements of contemporary museum design, it had just enough realism, sort of the heightened-fakery from a movie studio backlot. The open-ended design enabled an immersive stroll through recreations of the past. As you wandered you could go in and poke around stores, schools, mills, airports, and so on. It was almost like being in a holodeck, strolling through time (and from east to west).

Stickers stuck to poles outside of the National Gallery. I took the picture without knowing what the heck I was looking at, though. It was only when I got my ticket for the National Gallery and was asked to put the same sticker on my clothing did I realize how those poles ended up like that.

Hello, week, and happy Thanksgiving, Canada! This is our story for the next few days…

• The waiting is indeed the hardest part. We have an exciting new project that was supposed to start last week. We had hoped for this week. Now we’re looking at next week (at least that’s our assumption). We’re shifting our focus to other endeavors and are awaiting The Word so we can revise schedules for the next couple of months.
• Four presentations this week: Design research basics for the Wisconsin School of Business, Design Thinking for Business Class, improv and creativity at Carleton University, Muscles not Methods at Carleton University, and the closing keynote at UX Camp Ottawa, The Power of Bad Ideas. Whew.
• I’ve made some great progress on the next draft of the book, really enjoying the detailed questions and tweaks from the editors. And, we’ve got a finalized title: Interviewing Users: How to Uncover Compelling Insights!
• Ten years gone: From October 2002 – shuttle bus encounters, faucet innovations, cleaning a telemarketer list.
• What we’re consuming: Mozzeria, A Tree With Roots, Anki.

• The Ephemera Society is a non-profit body concerned with the collection, preservation, study and educational uses of hand-written and printed ephemera. – The term ‘ephemera’ covers a wide range of documents including leaflets, handbills, tickets, trade cards, programmes and playbills, printed tins and packaging, advertising inserts, posters, newspapers and much more. In the words of the society’s founder, Maurice Rickards, “the minor transient documents of everyday life”.

  Essentially produced to meet the needs of the day, such items reflect the moods and mores of past times in a way that more formal records cannot. Collectors of printed ephemera vary in their approach. Some focus on the ephemera of a particular trade or profession, others are interested in its social or graphic history. Other ephemerists collect documents simply as evocative reminders of the past.

• What does it mean when getting access to medical care looks like getting tickets for a popular concert? – Ottawa's chief medical officer of health announced Thursday that the city will start issuing single-use, non-transferable wristbands in place of tickets to indicate each person's place in the queue. He expects that to make things fairer than the ticket system for others in line. "People are picking up tickets and then disappearing, picking up more than one ticket, just generally misusing and gaming the system," Levy said.

  Until now, some healthy people have been picking up tickets ahead of time so their children or other vulnerable relatives won't have to spend hours waiting in crowds at the clinics, where they could be exposed them to diseases such as swine flu. The new system could prevent them from taking such measures.
