Unconsumption – Pecha Kucha
By Steve Portigal at 3:15 pm, Thursday February 22 2007

Last night was San Francisco’s Pecha Kucha night. I showed 20 slides, at 20 seconds per slide, on Unconsumption.

The slides are below.

And this widget will play the audio.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

There were some problems with the projection at the beginning so it’s not immediately obvious where we go from slide 1 to slide 2, but hopefully by slide 3 you’ll have figured it and can follow along.

And for better visual quality, I’ve put the slides up on flickr..

Update: the slides are also on the Pecha Kucha site

links from Technoratishare whatever you want with the group, which in an audience of designers, usually emerges in the form of inspirational images, frightening obsessions, and side projects. Anyway, the reason we speak of this today is that we noticed Steve Portigal has his recent 20 slides up (worth spending the 6:40 on), which he showed at the San Francisco Pecha Kucha night, and lo and behold, there’s a whole world of Pecha Kucha out there just waiting for you to join in. No Odeo steve but the prez looks interesting. You do know it gets windy in HK and not just laundry that flies! A/C units do as well.

    AC units! That’d be dangerous.

Odeo may need a couple of presses on play before it buffers the audio and plays it. But it does work. I just tried it again.

    really nice slides,
I love the re-use of tennis balls :)

*unfortunately Odeo audio seems broken… :(

I used the supload file to listen to your presentation as the ODEO failed for me too (probably a streaming type of file blocked by big brother here at work). Good stuff here and great photos. Funny to read the comments here and you trying to let Charles know that although it doesn’t work for him, it’s working for you. Thanks Steve. 😉

Well part of debugging is trying to identify where the problem is having. No one can get ODEO to work – it’s probably on their end; some of us can, some of the time, then it’s more complex.

We need a better solution because embedding playable audio in blogs is a really nifty feature I’d like to be doing more of!

[…] Steve Portigal did a turn at Pecha Kucha Night in San Francisco (20 images, 20 seconds per image) on the subject of unconsumption. See/hear the slide show via his blog. Pretty cool (and of course I appreciate the shout out). […]

Okay, I won’t update the post itself any more (which means that few will see this) but I made a change in how ODEO is configured and perhaps this will mean that it’ll work for you? If it still doesn’t, I’d be curious to hear about that. If it does, that’d be cool, too.

    Works like a charm.

[…] Portigal (who helped me with a great interview for that column) did a cool presentation about unconsumption in February 2007. I subsequently posted a lot about the notion here on […]
