I’m being hounded by SBC PacBell people – they are phoning at least once a day now. Wanting to offer me a new calling plan that will save money. I got rid of a few of them, who just kept on going and going, finally I gave in when a nice woman called, and acted like a human being. We went through the whole thing and she offered me a deal I’d be an idiot to refuse. When she went to close the deal, her computer messed up, she put me on hold and then dropped the call. So I wasted five minutes on that.

Since then, the calls have increased – I must have moved up on their sucker list. I just keep saying “no” because I just don’t have time for this crap. So, today, a dude calls and takes about 30 seconds to say “uhhhh Hello” in a manner that would make Beavis and Butthead seem like classic orators. He said that the call may be recorded for quality and training purposes – is this all right sir?

I said “no.” (hell, I’ve never been given the chance to respond to that before)

And he said “uhh, sir, I understand, but I see from your bill that….”

So, they have no power to deal with that – and despite any sort of privacy issues, they are expected to keep the sales pressure on? It was disgusting. I interrupted and indicated I did not wish to be recorded, and he kept trying to go back to the sales pitch “Yes, sir, but your calling plan…”

Finally I just ripped into him for being blah blah and yadda yadda and hung up.

So far, I’ve received one hang-up call since then.

I rented two films on Saturday: CQ, and Silent Running. The first is a recent movie about the filming/editing of a cheesy science fiction film in 1969 Paris, and the second is a not-so-cheesy science fiction film from 1971.

I learned about Silent Running years ago when I found an old Esquire magazine that had a series of portraits of the actors who portrayed the “drones” – double amputees who fit inside these plastic costumes to make for convincing little robots. It was a dramatic series of photos – people with no legs glaring with a lot of world experience and attitude, some as young as 16. I was very young when I saw it and really made an impression. I would love to find those pictures again. There are tons of web sites with stuff about the drones – CAD renderings, people who have made their own versions, on and on. But none of the portraits. Do let me know if you ever see what I’m describing.

Last night I saw the long-running SF revue Beach Blanket Babylon. The performers were enormously talented but sitting through the show was like dental surgery. The “topical” stuff was extermely dated (PG&E and rolling blackouts? Dot-com fever? puhleeze) and at best it hit a sort of Jay Leno-esque level of obviousness (shopping with Winona Ryder references, etc.). I enjoyed the talent of the performers, their energy, flexibility, and sheer vocal talent, but the content itself was just awful.

Well, the Mick poet keeps sending things to the list, assuming it’s a direct link to Mick. I think he’s frustrated that Mick has not yet responded to his message. Ahem.

To promote its new gold-colored dollar coin, which features Sacagawea, an American Indian woman, the United States Mint called on corporate America for help. It distributed the coins in Wal-Mart stores, spread them in Cheerios cereal boxes from General Mills and even persuaded IHOP to rename its “Silver Dollar Pancakes” as “Golden Dollar Pancakes.” But the marketing campaign, which began two years ago, has failed to persuade the public to use the coin widely, according to a report released last week by the General Accounting Office. The G.A.O. recommended that the promotion stop, and that is just as well, since the mint has already ceased production.

This may be the coolest (and most dangerous) web app yet. Comedy Central’s Crank Yankers has had a feature where you can send a “crank call” to a phone number – enter the phone number and they will dial that number and play one of their prank sound files to that person. Extremely cool.

The NYTimes reports on the reversing trend of school uniforms. Apparantly a huge movement in the late 1990s (perhaps in response to some school shootings) has started dwindling, as schools drop the requirements, or stretch them to include Aloha shirts, etc. Nice indicator of shifting social/cultural trends.
